4K Mac wallpapers

A 4K Mac wallpaper is 3840 x 2160 pixels, and it covers every MacBook screen without being stretched. The MacBook Air 13.6 inch runs at 2560 x 1664 and the 15.3 inch at 2880 x 1864. The MacBook Pro 14 inch is 3024 x 1964 and the 16 inch is 3456 x 2234. All of them are smaller than a 4K file, so macOS only scales it down. The iMac 24 inch at 4480 x 2520 and the Apple Studio Display at 5120 x 2880 are bigger than 4K, so for those pick a 5K file at 5120 x 2880. Every desktop wallpaper on this page downloads free from the website and is an original design by Carlos Vivero. One tip for MacBooks: choose a picture with a calm top centre, because the notch and the menu bar sit there and cover any detail in that spot.

FAQ

What resolution should a Mac wallpaper be?

Match your screen or go above it. MacBook Air models are 2560 x 1664 (13.6 inch) and 2880 x 1864 (15.3 inch), and MacBook Pro models are 3024 x 1964 (14 inch) and 3456 x 2234 (16 inch). A 3840 x 2160 file is larger than all of them. The 24 inch iMac at 4480 x 2520 and the Studio Display at 5120 x 2880 need a 5K file.

Will a 4K wallpaper look sharp on a MacBook, or is it too big?

It looks sharp, and it is not too big. macOS shrinks the image to the screen, which keeps fine lines clean. MacBook screens are a little taller than 16:9, so when the picture fills the screen a thin strip is trimmed from the left and right edges. Keep that in mind with pictures that have a subject near the side.

How do I set a wallpaper on a Mac?

Download the file, open System Settings and choose Wallpaper. Use the button for adding your own photos, pick the image and set it to fill the screen. Menu names can differ a little between macOS versions, so the labels on your Mac may not match these exactly.

Are these Mac wallpapers free?

Yes. Desktop wallpapers in 4K and 5K download free on velpaper.com. Phone wallpapers work differently: they unlock in the Velpaper apps for iPhone, iPad and Android after a short optional ad. You can also browse and set wallpapers in the Velpaper app for Mac.
