Sumi-e is Japanese ink painting. The painter grinds a stick of soot ink on a stone with a little water, loads a soft brush and works on absorbent paper that keeps every mark. There is no undo. A crane's neck or a plum branch goes down in one stroke, ideally in one breath, and the speed of the hand stays visible in the line.

The other half of the picture is the paper nobody touches. Japanese painters call it yohaku, the remaining white, and let it stand for mist, water or sky. On a phone that blank sheet has a practical job: it is where the lock screen puts the clock, the date and your notifications. A sumi-e wallpaper hands that space over instead of fighting for it.

Everything below is an original digital work made in the sumi-e tradition, not a scan of a historic scroll. Each piece uses warm cream paper, charcoal and grey washes, and exactly one small touch of vermilion red. The phone originals are 2160 by 3840 pixels.

Birds and water

Birds over water is the oldest pairing in ink painting: a few strokes for the bird, a wash for the water, and the rest of the sheet left open. All four of these keep their subject in the lower half of the screen.

Ink Crane is the signature piece: a red-crowned crane standing in reeds, a pine dissolving into mist behind it, and the red of its crown as the only colour. Moon Heron catches a grey heron in flight over misty reeds, with a pale red moon behind the wash. Quiet Boat is the emptiest of the set, one wooden rowing boat on still water with a red cloth tied at the bow. Koi Drift shows two koi seen from above, one charcoal and one white with a red mark on its head.

Mountains and mist

Ink landscapes were never about painting every rock. The nearest ridge goes down in dark, crisp strokes, each farther shape gets paler, and the mist is simply bare paper. Distance comes from dilution, not from detail.

Mist Pines follows that rule closely. Three old pines stand on a low ridge, the nearest drawn needle by needle, the farthest barely a grey shadow. A small red sun sits half hidden in the mist. The upper part of the screen is clean paper, so a large clock and a row of widgets fit without crowding. For wider mountain views, see the desktop set below.

Branches and seasons

Plum and bamboo belong to the Four Gentlemen, the subjects every ink student practises first, together with orchid and chrysanthemum. Plum is the first tree to flower at the end of winter, so it stands for endurance and for the year starting again.

Plum Branch rises from the lower corner in dry, textured strokes, and only three of its blossoms carry red. A few petals drift below. It is the lightest phone piece in mood, a good choice for spring or for anyone who finds birds too literal. Snow and bamboo live in the wide collection: a pine bough bent under snow, and a grove of slender stalks fading into wash.

Setting up the lock screen

Use a dark clock. Cream paper with grey ink is a light wallpaper, so a white clock simply disappears. Charcoal or deep ink grey reads best and looks like part of the painting.

Go easy on blur. A heavy Home Screen blur turns the paper into flat beige. A light blur, or the plain image, keeps the fibre texture.

Download the original. The washes have soft, wet edges that compression turns into visible bands. The full file keeps them smooth.

For your Mac

The wide paintings are composed for a 16:9 desktop. The subject sits low, often to one side, and the upper third stays quiet paper for the menu bar and desktop icons. Each is 3840 by 2160 pixels, and several share a subject with the phone set, so the crane on your iPhone can stand on the same shore on your Mac. All of them are free.

Questions

What is sumi-e?

Sumi-e is Japanese ink painting. It uses sumi, a solid ink made from soot and glue that is ground on an inkstone with water, applied with a soft brush on absorbent paper. Because the paper soaks up ink instantly, strokes cannot be corrected, so painters aim to lay down each form in one confident movement. Empty paper is treated as part of the composition, often standing for mist, water or sky. The tradition reached Japan from China with Zen monks by the 14th century. Velpaper's ink wallpapers are original digital works in that tradition, not reproductions of historic paintings.

Do light wallpapers drain the battery?

Not in any way you will notice. On an LCD screen the backlight runs at the same level whatever the image, so a light wallpaper costs nothing extra. On an OLED screen, black pixels are switched off, so a dark wallpaper saves a small amount of power, but a light one does not add any drain beyond normal use. The lock screen is usually visible for a few seconds at a time, which makes the difference smaller still. Brightness settings and the apps you run matter far more than the colour of the paper.

What clock colour works best on cream paper?

A dark clock. The ink wallpapers are light, so a white clock loses contrast against the cream paper. Charcoal, black or a deep ink grey reads clearly and matches the brush strokes. If you prefer a touch of colour, a muted red echoes the single vermilion accent in each painting, much like a red seal stamped on a scroll. On iPhone you can pick the clock colour when you customise the lock screen, and the Velpaper preview shows the time in place before you save.

What sizes are the Japanese ink wallpapers?

The phone wallpapers are 2160 by 3840 pixels, a 9:16 image that scales down cleanly to any current iPhone or Android phone. Velpaper desktop wallpapers come in 3840 by 2160 (4K) or 5120 by 2880 (5K); the wide ink paintings in this collection are 3840 by 2160. Always download the original from the wallpaper page rather than saving a preview, because previews are compressed and the soft ink washes show banding when they are squeezed.

Are these wallpapers free?

Browsing and previewing the whole collection is free on the website and in the apps. Most phone wallpapers unlock after a short optional ad in the iPhone and Android apps; on the website, if no ad is available, the original downloads for free. The wide desktop ink paintings are free. You do not need an account or a subscription to download any of them.
