How to change WhatsApp wallpaper step by step on iPhone, Android, PC and WhatsApp Web, for all chats or just one, with dark mode dimming and pictures that fit.

In short: To change your WhatsApp wallpaper, open Settings, then Chats, then Default chat theme (called Chat wallpaper or Wallpaper in older versions) and pick a colour or one of your own photos. WhatsApp lets you change the picture behind your messages in about four taps. You can set one wallpaper for every chat or give a single conversation its own background, and only you see it: the other person keeps whatever they picked on their phone.

The short answer: go to Settings, Chats, Default chat theme and choose a colour, a built-in wallpaper or a photo from your gallery. Older versions call this item Chat wallpaper or simply Wallpaper. Below are the exact steps for iPhone, Android, desktop and WhatsApp Web, and a few notes on which images actually look good behind chat bubbles.

How to change WhatsApp wallpaper on iPhone

  1. Open WhatsApp and tap Settings in the bottom bar.
  2. Tap Chats, then Default chat theme. On older builds the item is Chat Wallpaper.
  3. Pick a ready-made theme, or open the wallpaper options and choose between Bright, Dark, Solid Colours and Photos.
  4. If you choose Photos, select the picture, pinch and drag to frame it, then tap Set.

A theme changes the wallpaper and the colour of your own message bubbles together. If you only want a new background, go straight to the wallpaper part of the screen and leave the bubble colour as it is.

The photo has to be in your library first. Save the image to Photos, then come back to WhatsApp. If you are still deciding on a picture, our guide to the iPhone wallpaper size explains why a 2160 × 3840 file stays sharp on every model.

How to change WhatsApp wallpaper on Android

  1. Open WhatsApp and tap the three-dot menu in the top right corner.
  2. Tap Settings, then Chats.
  3. Tap Default chat theme. On older versions it is Wallpaper, then Change.
  4. Choose Bright, Dark, Solid colours or My photos, pick an image and confirm with Set wallpaper.

Samsung, Pixel and Xiaomi phones all show the same WhatsApp screens, because the menu belongs to the app rather than to the phone. The gallery picker may look different depending on your phone, but the result is the same. Setting the home screen background of the phone itself is a separate job, covered in our guide to changing the wallpaper on Android.

One chat only or all chats

The Default chat theme applies to every conversation that has no wallpaper of its own. To give one chat a different background:

  • iPhone: open the chat, tap the contact or group name at the top, then tap Chat theme (formerly Wallpaper & Sound).
  • Android: open the chat, tap the three-dot menu, then Chat theme (formerly Wallpaper).

A per-chat wallpaper wins over the default one. It is a handy way to tell similar group chats apart at a glance: a warm photo for the family group, a plain dark colour for work. To undo it, open the same menu in that chat and go back to the default theme.

Menu names move a little between app versions. If yours differ, look for the item with a palette or picture icon inside the chat details or the Chats section of Settings.

Dark mode and wallpaper dimming

WhatsApp treats light and dark mode separately. On most current versions, the wallpaper you set while your phone is in dark mode is used for dark mode, and the light one stays for daytime. Check both if your background seems to disappear in the evening.

In dark mode the wallpaper screen also shows a dimming slider. It darkens the picture so white text and light bubbles stay readable. A bright photo usually needs the slider pushed well to the right, while a picture that is already dark can stay close to full brightness.

On an OLED phone, deep backgrounds also look cleaner at night. Our collection of dark wallpapers for OLED screens has images built for exactly that.

All three keep their brightest areas small, so bubbles and text read clearly even with little dimming.

WhatsApp wallpaper on PC, Mac and WhatsApp Web

On a computer the options are narrower, and they do not sync from your phone: each device keeps its own background.

  • WhatsApp Web: open Settings, then Chats, then Chat wallpaper. You can pick a solid colour and switch the WhatsApp doodles on or off. At the time of writing, the browser version does not accept your own photo.
  • Mac app: recent versions add chat themes under Settings, Chats, including your own images. The feature has rolled out gradually, so an older install may only offer colours.
  • Windows app: look under Settings, Chats for the wallpaper or chat theme option. What it offers depends on the version you have installed.

If you want your laptop to match your phone, set the desktop wallpaper of the computer itself and use a quiet solid colour inside WhatsApp.

Which pictures work as a WhatsApp wallpaper

A chat wallpaper spends most of its life half hidden. The header covers the top, the keyboard covers the lower half while you type, and bubbles sit across everything in between. That changes what makes a good choice.

  • Calm over busy. Gradients, soft light and simple textures keep messages readable. Faces and text inside the picture end up behind bubbles anyway.
  • Medium contrast. Very bright highlights fight with white bubbles in light mode; pure black areas swallow dark bubbles in dark mode.
  • Portrait and high resolution. WhatsApp fills the screen and crops what does not fit. A tall 2160 × 3840 image leaves room to frame it without going soft, while a screenshot or a photo forwarded in a chat is often compressed and blurry.

These Velpaper phone wallpapers are 2160 × 3840 originals with soft gradients and no hard detail near the centre. Tidal Quiet is free to download; others unlock after a short optional ad in the app. Save the file to your gallery, then pick it in WhatsApp under Photos or My photos. How to reset the WhatsApp wallpaper

Open the same menu you used to set it: Settings, Chats, Default chat theme for all chats, or Chat theme inside a single conversation. Choose the default theme, or the classic doodle wallpaper listed as Default in older versions. A chat with its own background keeps it until you reset that chat separately.

Telegram works differently and allows far more customisation, from patterns to animated gradients. If you use both apps, our guide to Telegram chat wallpapers covers the Telegram side.

Questions

How do I change the WhatsApp wallpaper for all chats?

Open WhatsApp, go to Settings, then Chats, then Default chat theme. Older versions call this item Chat wallpaper on iPhone or Wallpaper on Android. Choose a ready-made theme, a solid colour, a built-in wallpaper or a picture from your photos, then confirm. The background now applies to every conversation that does not have its own per-chat wallpaper. Only you see it; your contacts keep their own backgrounds.

Can I set a different wallpaper for one WhatsApp chat?

Yes. On iPhone, open the chat, tap the contact or group name at the top and choose Chat theme (formerly Wallpaper & Sound). On Android, open the chat, tap the three-dot menu and choose Chat theme (formerly Wallpaper). The per-chat background overrides the default one. It is a simple way to tell busy group chats apart, and you can reset it from the same menu at any time.

Does the other person see my WhatsApp wallpaper?

No. The chat wallpaper and chat theme are stored on your device and visible only to you. Your contact sees the background they chose on their own phone. That also means changing a wallpaper never sends a notification or a message to anyone, so you can experiment freely with different pictures in any chat, including groups.

Why does my WhatsApp wallpaper look blurry?

Usually because the picture is too small or was compressed. WhatsApp fills the whole screen and crops the rest, so a low-resolution image gets enlarged and turns soft. Screenshots and photos that arrived through a messenger are typical culprits. Use a tall original of at least the screen resolution, ideally 2160 × 3840 pixels, saved straight to your gallery rather than forwarded as a photo.

Can I use my own photo as wallpaper on WhatsApp Web?

At the time of writing, no. WhatsApp Web offers solid colours under Settings, Chats, Chat wallpaper, plus a switch for the WhatsApp doodles. Recent versions of the Mac app add chat themes with your own images, rolled out gradually, and the Windows app depends on the version installed. Backgrounds do not sync between devices, so the phone and the computer each keep their own.
