Search for iPhone wallpaper size and you get a dozen numbers, one per model. The rule behind them is simple: iOS shows a wallpaper at the exact pixel size of the screen, so any image at least that large looks sharp. One 2160 × 3840 original is larger than every current iPhone screen, which is why it works everywhere.

Below are the real resolutions, model by model, and the few details that decide whether a wallpaper stays crisp or turns soft.

Why 2160 × 3840 is the right master size

A 2160 × 3840 image is 9:16, the classic tall 4K frame. Its long side, 3840 pixels, is taller than the tallest iPhone screen, the 2868 pixels of the iPhone 16 Pro Max. iOS only has to scale it down, and scaling down never adds blur.

The shape is slightly different, though. Modern iPhones are about 19.5:9, a little narrower than 9:16. When the image fills the height, roughly a tenth of its width falls outside the screen on each side, and iOS trims those strips.

That is why the edges of a good phone wallpaper stay calm. If the subject sits in the middle and the sides are plain sky, wall or gradient, the crop is invisible. A face or a line of text near the edge is what gets cut.

iPhone wallpaper size by model

These are the native screen resolutions in pixels, width by height, for current and recent models.

ModelResolution (pixels)
iPhone 16 Pro Max1320 × 2868
iPhone 16 Pro1206 × 2622
iPhone 16 Plus1290 × 2796
iPhone 161179 × 2556
iPhone 15 Pro Max1290 × 2796
iPhone 15 Pro1179 × 2556
iPhone 151179 × 2556
iPhone 141170 × 2532
iPhone SE (3rd gen)750 × 1334

Newer models follow the same pattern: a little more height, the same tall proportion. You do not need a separate file for each phone. Any 2160 × 3840 original covers all of them with room to crop.

The iPhone SE differs in shape, not in sharpness. Its 750 × 1334 screen is exactly 9:16, so a 2160 × 3840 image fits it with no side crop at all.

What 4K means on a phone

On a television, 4K means 3840 × 2160 in landscape. A phone wallpaper stands that frame upright, so 4K means 3840 pixels on the long side and 2160 on the short one.

No iPhone screen shows all of those pixels at once. The point is headroom. The extra resolution lets iOS crop the sides, and lets you pinch and move the image in the wallpaper editor, while the result still lands sharp at the screen's native size.

Each of these is a 2160 × 3840 original, so the same file suits an iPhone 16 Pro Max and an iPhone SE.

Why screenshots and messenger copies look soft

A screenshot is already exactly your screen size, with nothing to spare. Any crop or zoom from there stretches pixels instead of trimming extra ones, and edges go fuzzy.

Messengers are worse. Most chat apps recompress photos to save data and shrink the long side well below 4K. Gradients pick up visible bands, fine grain turns into blocks, and dark areas show square artefacts that an OLED screen makes easy to see.

If you want to share a wallpaper, send the original file as a document rather than as a photo, so the app leaves it alone.

How Velpaper delivers the original

Every Velpaper phone wallpaper is a JPEG at 2160 × 3840 pixels, without a watermark. The previews on the site and in the app are compressed so pages load fast; the download is the full original.

You can get it from the iPhone and Android apps or from the wallpaper's page on velpaper.com. Save it to Photos, then go to Settings, Wallpaper, Add New Wallpaper and pick it from your library. iOS fits it to your screen, and you can pinch to reframe before you confirm.

Android and desktop sizes

Android phones vary more, but most screens sit close to 20:9, for example 1080 × 2400 or 1440 × 3200. The same 2160 × 3840 original covers them too, with a similar small crop at the sides.

Desktop is a different shape. A Mac or Windows wallpaper needs a wide frame: 3840 × 2160 for 4K displays and 5120 × 2880 for 5K displays such as the Apple Studio Display. Velpaper makes desktop wallpapers separately at those sizes, composed for a wide screen rather than cut from a phone image.

Questions

What size is an iPhone wallpaper?

An iPhone wallpaper is shown at the native resolution of the screen. That ranges from 750 × 1334 pixels on the iPhone SE (3rd gen) to 1320 × 2868 pixels on the iPhone 16 Pro Max, with most recent models around 1179 × 2556. You do not need to match each model. A single 2160 × 3840 pixel image is larger than all of them, so iOS only scales it down and trims a little at the sides.

Is 1080 × 1920 enough for an iPhone wallpaper?

Only for the iPhone SE. A 1080 × 1920 image is Full HD in a 9:16 frame, which is smaller than the screens of every iPhone from the iPhone 14 onward. To fill a 2532 to 2868 pixel tall screen, iOS has to enlarge it by roughly a third or more, and enlarged images look soft around fine lines and text. For a sharp result on a modern iPhone, start from 2160 × 3840.

Does a bigger wallpaper image waste storage?

Barely. A 2160 × 3840 JPEG is usually a few megabytes, about the size of one ordinary photo from the iPhone camera. When you set it, iOS prepares its own copy for the screen, so the wallpaper keeps working even if you later delete the original from Photos. The larger source costs a few megabytes once and gives iOS room to crop without losing sharpness.

Why does iOS crop my wallpaper?

Because the image and the screen have different shapes. Recent iPhones are about 19.5:9, a little narrower than the common 9:16 frame of 4K wallpapers. When iOS fills the screen height, the extra width falls outside the display and is trimmed, roughly a tenth on each side. Wallpapers with calm edges and a centred subject hide this crop. You can also pinch and drag in the wallpaper editor to choose what stays in view.

Where can I get 4K wallpaper originals?

Velpaper publishes original wallpapers as 2160 × 3840 pixel JPEG files without a watermark, in the iPhone and Android apps and on velpaper.com. Browsing and previewing are free. Most phone wallpapers unlock after a short optional ad in the apps; on the website, if no ad is available, the original downloads for free. There is no account and no subscription. Desktop versions come in 3840 × 2160 and 5120 × 2880.
