Moon Wallpapers: Free 4K Night Skies for iPhone and Desktop
Moon wallpapers for iPhone and desktop: full moons over ink cities, a woodblock plum moon, a crescent poster and quiet seas. Free 4K originals, no watermark.
In short: A good moon wallpaper is one bright shape on a calm sky, so the clock has room and the screen stays dark. Velpaper has a dozen 4K moon wallpapers for phones, from black noir skies made for OLED to a cream woodblock plum moon, and five free desktop versions in 3840 × 2160.

The moon is the easiest picture to live with on a phone. It is one bright shape on a large, quiet sky. The sky gives the clock a clean field, and the moon gives the eye a single place to land. On an OLED screen, a black night sky also stays truly black, so the wallpaper glows rather than glares.
This collection has twelve original moon wallpapers for iPhone and Android, each a 2160 × 3840 file, and five wide versions for Mac and PC. They are illustrations, not photos of the real moon, in four very different moods: ink noir, Japanese prints, mid-century posters and soft dusk.
Why a moon works on a lock screen
One bright point. A full moon is the brightest thing in the frame, and nothing competes with it. Notifications stack on the lower half without fighting a busy picture.
A big empty sky. Most of a moon picture is sky, which is exactly what the clock needs. White digits on a dark sky, or dark digits on a pale one, read at a glance.
Real black on OLED. Every iPhone since the iPhone X, apart from the XR, the 11 and the SE models, uses an OLED panel, where black pixels are switched off. A night sky built from near black looks deeper than any grey, and the moon sits in it like a lamp. Our guide to dark OLED wallpapers explains the effect in more detail.
Moons over a black sky
The darkest set comes from our noir series: black ink, white line work and a pale moon. They are made for a dark lock screen and a white clock.
Moon Ledge puts a full moon in the middle of a black sky, watched by a stone gargoyle on a ledge, with two thin spires at the bottom. The moon sits below the time, so the clock floats in pure black. Lone Spire is even simpler: a small white moon above a stepped tower drawn in white outline. Deco Gold adds colour, with a large yellow moon pierced by an Art Deco spire, gold trim on the towers and fog rolling between them. Ink Noir is the busiest of the four, a tilted forest of skyscrapers in black and white with the moon caught between them.
Soft moons: Japanese prints and a quiet sea
The second set is pale and warm. These suit a light lock screen and a dark clock, and they feel calmer in daylight.
Plum Moon is drawn like a woodblock print: a cream full moon high on aged paper, an indigo band across the top and a twisted plum branch with white and red blossoms rising from the bottom left. The time lands right on the moon, which works like a soft spotlight behind dark digits. More prints in this style are in our collection of ukiyo-e wallpapers. Shoji Moon shows the moon through a paper screen, with a pine shadow across it and a sheer curtain in warm sand light. Moon Heron is pure sumi ink: a heron in flight over reeds and a small red moon low on the horizon. If you like this style, our article on Japanese ink wallpapers has the rest of the series.
Saltwater Moon is the only one that looks like a real scene: a tiny moon over a flat sea at dusk, pink and lilac clouds above, and a dark headland on the right. The water carries soft ripples, and the top half is almost empty, which keeps the clock clean.
Graphic moons: posters and lo-fi rooftops
Some moons are more design than landscape. They read from across a room and look good next to bold app icons.
Moon Boat4K · PhoneMoon Boat is a mid-century poster: a huge golden crescent on deep blue, a few small planets, and a pale crescent boat riding white wave lines at the bottom. Paper Moon flips the usual colours, with a black moon on white paper next to a stepped black tower, so a black clock matches the moon. The lo-fi pair is lilac and soft: Phone Booth has a thin crescent at the top and a booth glowing pink on the horizon, and Rooftop sets a full moon low behind a water tank and an old TV antenna.
How to place the moon under the clock
The clock takes the upper third of the screen. Decide whether the moon goes behind the time, like Plum Moon, or below it, like Moon Ledge. Both work. What rarely works is a moon cut in half by the edge of the clock.
- Pick the clock colour by hand. White for the black skies, dark for the paper and dusk ones. iOS often picks a middle tone that sinks into the picture.
- Move, do not enlarge. Drag the picture up or down in the editor to place the moon. Enlarging pushes the moon toward the edges. If it already looks too big, our fix for an iPhone wallpaper that is zoomed in covers Perspective Zoom and cropping.
- Leave the lower half quiet. Notifications sit there. Moon Ledge and Lone Spire keep their detail at the very bottom, under the notification stack.

Paper Moon4K · DesktopInk Moonlit Boat leaves most of the screen to pale paper, with a moored boat and a red moon reflected over a misty shore, which keeps desktop icons readable. Ink Moon Heron and Shoji Moon are just as quiet. The wide Plum Moon moves the blossoms to the left and the moon to the centre, and Paper Moon is the most graphic: a black moon, one stepped tower and a long horizon line on white.

Questions
Are these real photos of the moon?
No. Every moon wallpaper here is an original illustration made for Velpaper, not a telescope photo or a NASA image. That is a deliberate choice: a drawn moon can sit exactly where the clock needs it, with a clean sky around it and no noise in the dark areas. The styles range from black ink noir and Japanese woodblock to a mid-century poster. Saltwater Moon is the most photographic, a calm sea at dusk with a tiny moon above it.
Which moon wallpaper is best for an OLED iPhone?
The noir set: Moon Ledge, Lone Spire, Deco Gold and Ink Noir. Their skies are near black, so on an OLED screen most pixels stay dark and the moon glows on its own. Moon Ledge and Lone Spire are the calmest, with almost the whole upper half empty for a white clock. Deco Gold adds a warm yellow moon and gold trim if you want a little colour. All four are 2160 × 3840 files that stay sharp on every current iPhone.
Is there a moon wallpaper for PC or laptop?
Yes. Five designs come in a wide 3840 × 2160 version for Mac, Windows PCs and laptops: Ink Moonlit Boat, Ink Moon Heron, Shoji Moon, Plum Moon and Paper Moon. They are built for a wide screen rather than cut from the phone file, so the moon and the main shapes sit where desktop icons will not cover them. All five desktop moon wallpapers are free to download from velpaper.com or the Mac app.
Which moon wallpaper suits a light lock screen?
Plum Moon, Shoji Moon, Moon Heron and Paper Moon. Their backgrounds are cream, sand or white paper, so a dark clock reads clearly on them. Plum Moon places the moon right behind the time, which frames the digits. Saltwater Moon sits in between, with a pale pink and lilac sky that works with either a dark clock or a deep plum tint. For a dark lock screen, choose one of the noir moons or Moon Boat on deep blue.
Are the moon wallpapers free?
Browsing and previewing every wallpaper is free on the website and in the apps. The phone moon wallpapers unlock after a short optional ad in the iPhone and Android apps; on the website, if no ad is available, the original downloads for free. The five desktop versions are free. There is no account and no subscription, and you always get the full original file without a watermark.
