Winter iPad Wallpaper: Snow and Cold Blue 4K Picks
Winter iPad wallpapers with snow, frost, cold blue and cozy lit windows, sorted by how they survive rotation, plus free 4K landscape files and iPadOS 26 steps.
In short: The best winter iPad wallpaper keeps its snow or cold blue across the center, so rotation does not cut it off. Blue Hour and Snow Lantern Village work in portrait and landscape as 2160 × 3840 phone originals, and a free 4K file such as Glacier Spiral Hall is better for an iPad in a keyboard case.

A good winter iPad wallpaper keeps its snow, frost or cold blue across the middle of the frame, because the iPad shows a different part of the same picture when you rotate it. Foggy blue ridges, a snowy village and frosted glass curves survive both portrait and landscape; a lit cabin at the bottom of a frozen lake does not. Velpaper wallpapers are 4K originals for phones (2160 × 3840) and desktops (4K, some 5K), and both work on an iPad if you match the file to how you hold it.
Below are the iPad sizes, what rotation does to a phone file, and winter picks sorted by orientation, from cold blue to cozy light, each with one line on why it fits. These have no trees with ornaments, so they last until spring; for the holiday look, see our Christmas iPad wallpapers.
Winter iPad wallpaper size and the rotation crop
These are the native resolutions, portrait width by height, for current iPads:
| Model | Resolution (pixels) | Shape |
|---|---|---|
| iPad Pro 13-inch (M4, M5) | 2064 × 2752 | 4:3 |
| iPad Pro 11-inch (M4, M5) | 1668 × 2420 | 1.45:1 |
| iPad Air 13-inch (M2, M3) | 2048 × 2732 | 4:3 |
| iPad Air 11-inch (M2, M3) | 1640 × 2360 | 1.44:1 |
| iPad (A16) and iPad (10th gen) | 1640 × 2360 | 1.44:1 |
| iPad mini (A17 Pro) and iPad mini (6th gen) | 1488 × 2266 | 1.52:1 |
Here is what that means for the two kinds of Velpaper files:
- A 2160 × 3840 phone wallpaper is wider than every iPad held upright, so portrait stays sharp. The iPad screen is squarer than a phone, so iPadOS trims the top and bottom, about an eighth each on the 13-inch models. In landscape you see roughly the middle 40 percent of the height, enlarged to fill the width: by about a quarter on the 13-inch models, much less on the 11-inch ones and the mini.
- A 4K desktop wallpaper at 3840 × 2160 covers every iPad in landscape without any enlarging. Held upright, only a narrow strip from the middle shows.
The iPad never loses the sides of a phone file, only the top and bottom, so what counts is how high the snow scene sits. Older models and the math are in our iPad wallpaper size guide.
How to set a winter wallpaper on iPad
- Open the wallpaper in the Velpaper app on your iPad, or on velpaper.com in Safari, and save the original.
- If you downloaded it in Safari, open it from Downloads in the Files app, tap Share and choose Save Image to put it in Photos.
- Open Settings, tap Wallpaper, then Add New Wallpaper, then Photos, and pick the image.
- Pinch and drag so the snow scene sits in the center, then tap Add.
- Choose Set as Wallpaper Pair, or Customize Home Screen to give the home screen a blurred or different picture.
- Rotate the iPad once. If one orientation cuts off the subject or looks soft, try a file from another section below.
Menu names match iPadOS 26 in English and can differ slightly in later updates. Every other route, including Photo Shuffle, is in how to change the wallpaper on iPad.
Cold blue wallpapers that survive iPad rotation
These phone originals carry their winter mood through the middle band of the frame, the part the iPad shows in both orientations.
Blue Hour fades a pale winter sky into layers of foggy blue mountain ridges, and landscape keeps the horizon and the first ridges. Snow Lantern Village is a snowy village with warm lit windows below a dark mountain and a full moon; landscape keeps the mountain and the top rows of roofs. Arctic Current bends silver and teal glass into two large curves that meet in the middle, the closest thing to frost on a window. Starlit Window frames snowy pines under a night sky in a tall white arch, and landscape keeps the upper arch and the tree tops while the candle on the sill drops out.
Portrait only: snow, lanterns and cozy light
These keep their subject low in the frame, so they look best on an iPad you hold upright, in a stand or for reading under a blanket.

Snow Courtyard4K · PhoneMoon Gate Snow is a white courtyard with a round moon gate, two snowy pines and a small lamp under falling snow, all in the lower half. Snow Lantern Garden sets a stone lantern glowing warm next to a snow-laden pine, low on a dark night screen. Dusk Snow House puts a small white house with one lit window and a single pine on a snowy hill under a lilac sky, the most minimal pick. Frozen Lake Cabin sets one lit cabin on a frozen lake below snowy peaks and a starry sky; in landscape you see the peaks but not the cabin. Snow Courtyard curves gray walls around a starry sky, with a lit window and a snowy pine in the lower right.

Ink Snow Branch4K · DesktopGlacier Spiral Hall spirals ice-blue stairs around a glowing cyan center on the left, cold and bright. Snow Village is a woodblock print of a snowy mountain under falling snow, with a navy sky and a small village along the bottom. Concrete Dome is a white dome with one dark door under a pale gray-blue sky, simple enough to read like a snow shelter. Ink Snow Branch is a pine branch heavy with snow in black ink on cream paper, clean behind apps. For more winter moods on a phone, see our winter aesthetic wallpapers.
Common problems and fixes
- The cabin or the house is cut off after rotating. The subject sits outside the middle band. Pick from the cold blue gallery, or keep a portrait-only wallpaper and lock the rotation in Control Center.
- It looks soft in landscape. A phone file is being enlarged to fill the width, which shows most on the 13-inch models. Switch to a 4K desktop file for landscape.
- White snow makes the clock hard to read. Choose a night scene such as Snow Lantern Village, or drag the picture in the editor so a darker part sits under the clock.
- The picture is zoomed in further than you framed it. Open the More menu in the wallpaper editor and turn off Perspective Zoom if your version shows it.
- You want something warmer by March. Our iPad wallpaper collection has picks for every season.

Questions
What is the best winter wallpaper for iPad?
One whose snow or cold blue runs through the middle of the frame, because the iPad shows a different window of the same picture in portrait and landscape. Blue Hour is a strong pick: a pale winter sky over layers of foggy blue mountain ridges, with color all the way across the center. Snow Lantern Village and Arctic Current work the same way. If your iPad lives in a keyboard case, use a desktop file such as Glacier Spiral Hall, a 4K ice-blue spiral staircase that downloads for free.
What size should a winter iPad wallpaper be?
At least your screen's resolution, with room for rotation. The 13-inch iPad Pro is 2064 × 2752 pixels, the 13-inch iPad Air is 2048 × 2732, the 11-inch iPad Air and the iPad (A16) are 1640 × 2360, and the iPad mini (A17 Pro) is 1488 × 2266. A 2160 × 3840 phone wallpaper stays sharp on every iPad held upright. For landscape, a 3840 × 2160 desktop file covers every model without any enlarging. Small snow images saved from social media show banding in pale skies on a large iPad screen.
Is there a winter iPad wallpaper that is not Christmas themed?
Yes, and that is the point of this set. None of these picks has ornaments, lights on a tree or a wreath, so they work from the first snow until March. Blue Hour and Arctic Current are pure cold blue with no objects at all. Moon Gate Snow is a white courtyard with a round gate and snowy pines, and Dusk Snow House is one small lit house on a snowy hill. For a cozy look without the holidays, Snow Lantern Garden pairs a glowing stone lantern with snow.
Why is my winter wallpaper cut off when I rotate the iPad?
iPadOS keeps the wallpaper upright when the iPad turns, so it has to fill a tall screen in portrait and a wide one in landscape with the same image. It does that by keeping the center and trimming the edges. With a phone file, landscape loses the top and bottom, so anything low in the frame, like a cabin on a frozen lake or a candle on a sill, can vanish. Pick wallpapers with snow or color in the center, use a desktop file for landscape, or lock the rotation.
Are these winter iPad wallpapers free?
Browsing and previewing are free on velpaper.com and in the Velpaper apps for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Android.
