Best Wallpaper Websites in 2026: 7 Sites Ranked

The best wallpaper websites are the ones that hand you the original file: full resolution, no watermark, and a clear answer to whether you are allowed to use it. Most sites that rank for "wallpaper" fail at least one of those. They serve a 1920 × 1080 copy of someone else's picture, wrapped in ads, with no word on where it came from.

We compared seven sites on four things that decide what lands on your screen: original resolution, licence, ads, and whether there are real phone sizes or only desktop ones. Velpaper is our own site. We put it first only for the job it is built for and say where the others are better.

Quick answer

For original wallpapers in 4K and 5K, with the same scene in phone and desktop sizes, use Velpaper. For free photography you can also reuse in your own projects, use Unsplash or Pexels. For one specific desktop image at an exact resolution, search Wallhaven. For artists' work, go to DeviantArt and read each artist's terms.

The 7 best wallpaper websites, ranked

1. 1. Velpaper

   • Original wallpapers made for Velpaper: lit architecture, Gaudi mosaics, Japanese ink and ukiyo-e, lo-fi night scenes, noir cities and quiet landscapes.
   • Phone wallpapers at 2160 × 3840, desktop wallpapers at 3840 × 2160 or 5120 × 2880. No watermark.
   • Licence: personal use on your own screens. No resale, no redistribution.
   • Every desktop wallpaper is free, with no account and no subscription. Some phone wallpapers unlock after a short optional ad in the iPhone and Android apps.
   • Many scenes exist in a tall and a wide version, such as Trencadis Wave for the phone and its desktop twin.

Best for: a calm, consistent look across phone and computer. Weak spot: a few hundred wallpapers in one style, no photography, and still images only.

2. 2. Unsplash

   • Millions of photographs from photographers around the world.
   • Under the Unsplash License you can use free photos for almost anything, commercial use included, without asking or crediting. You cannot sell them unchanged or rebuild a similar service from them. Unsplash+ images are paid and have their own terms.
   • The original download is the photographer's file, often larger than 4K. A portrait filter helps with phone searches.
   • Sponsored photos from brands appear in some feeds and search results.

Best for: real photography with a clear licence. Weak spot: photos are composed as photos, so the subject often sits right under the clock or the Dock.

3. 3. Wallhaven

   • A community library aimed squarely at desktops, with search by exact resolution, aspect ratio, colour and tag.
   • Categories for general, anime and people images, with a safe-for-work filter switched on by default.
   • No licence is granted. Uploads belong to whoever made them, and many are game screenshots, renders, fan art or reposts.
   • Free, with an optional account.

Best for: finding one image at 3440 × 1440 or 5120 × 2880 on a specific theme. Weak spot: portrait images are a small share, and you cannot reuse anything beyond your own screen.

4. 4. Pexels

   • Free photos and free stock videos, with filters for orientation and colour.
   • The Pexels License is close to Unsplash's: use is free and credit is optional, but you cannot sell unaltered copies.
   • Resolution depends on the contributor, so check the file size before you set it on a 4K monitor.

Best for: photos plus short videos you can turn into an animated desktop. Weak spot: generic stock subjects show up often.

5. 5. DeviantArt

   • An artist community where many illustrators post wallpaper packs in several sizes.
   • Rights stay with the artist. Read the description: some allow personal wallpaper use, some sell full-size packs, some turn downloads off.

Best for: distinctive illustration and supporting the person who made it. Weak spot: search is noisy, and quality varies widely.

6. 6. Reddit wallpaper communities

   • Subreddits such as r/wallpaper, r/MobileWallpaper and r/WidescreenWallpaper surface what people actually like, including ultrawide sizes.
   • Sources are often missing. Ask the poster or run a reverse image search before you assume a picture is free to reuse.

Best for: discovery and odd screen sizes. Weak spot: you do the quality and rights check yourself.

7. 7. WallpaperAccess and similar aggregator sites

   • Huge themed galleries: anime, games, cars, cities.
   • Sources and rights are rarely stated, resolution varies widely and many files are smaller than 4K. Pages carry a lot of advertising.

Best for: a fandom topic you will not find elsewhere. Weak spot: everything we judged on.

Comparison table

Velpaper, Unsplash and Pexels are the only three where you know exactly what you are allowed to do with the file. That matters more than it sounds once a wallpaper ends up in a video thumbnail or a printed poster.

How to check a wallpaper before you download it

Look for the pixel size, not the word "HD". A 4K desktop file is 3840 × 2160, a 5K one is 5120 × 2880, and a 4K phone file stands that frame upright at 2160 × 3840. Our PC wallpaper size guide lists what each monitor really needs.

Download the original, not the preview. Right-clicking a thumbnail saves a compressed copy. Use the site's download button, and never use a screenshot or a file forwarded through a messenger as your source.

Mind the phone crop. Most phones are about 19.5:9 or 20:9, narrower than 9:16, so the sides of a tall image get trimmed. A wallpaper with calm edges survives that. The Android wallpaper size guide shows how much disappears on common screens.

Read the licence if you will reuse it. Setting a picture as your own wallpaper is the narrowest kind of use. Putting it in a video, on a print or in an app is a different question, and only sites with a written licence answer it.

Phone or PC: which site for which screen

For a desktop, Wallhaven's resolution filter and Unsplash's landscape photos cover most needs, and Velpaper adds 5K originals composed for a wide screen, with space for icons and windows. On a Mac, our ranking of 4K wallpaper apps for Mac goes deeper.

For a phone, start with sites that make portrait images on purpose. A cropped landscape photo rarely survives the clock, the widgets and the side trim. Velpaper's phone wallpapers keep the upper third quiet for the clock, like Phone Booth or Tidal Quiet.

If you want both screens to match, look for scenes published in two shapes rather than cropping one file twice. We collected every Velpaper pair in matching phone and desktop wallpapers.

Want something that moves? Velpaper's catalog is still images only. For animated desktops, our guide to live wallpapers on PC covers the apps that play video in the background.
